Focus on Eye Care
Did you know that more than 2.2 million Americans age 40 and older have open angle glaucoma, an eye disease that can lead to blindness? Because early detection is key, regular eye exams are recommended. January is National Eye Care Month — if you haven't had an eye exam lately, consider making an appointment with your doctor today.
Here are some helpful hints for taking care of your eyes:
- Have a complete eye exam every one to two years. Most eye diseases can be treated if detected early.
- Have a test for glaucoma every one to two years.
- Be extra careful if you have diabetes or a family history of eye disease. Have an eye exam every year.
- See an eye doctor immediately if you have any loss or dimness of eyesight, eye pain, double vision, extreme redness or swelling of your eye or eyelid.

Eye Safety in the Workplace
While it's important to have regular exams to prevent eye disease, it's also crucial to wear protective eye gear if you work in an at-risk environment. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, thousands of people are blinded each year from work-related eye injuries that could have been prevented with the proper selection and use of eye and face protection.
Employees should use personal protective equipment in conjunction with guards, engineering controls, and sound manufacturing practices.
