Good Health Habits Can Prevent a Cold or Flu

"The first wealth is health."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

It's the time of year when sniffles and coughs dominate conversations. An average of 5 percent to 20 percent of the American population gets the flu each year, and millions more catch a cold.

The best way to fight an illness is to avoid it altogether. The following healthy habits can help you stay healthy all year long.

  • Get plenty of sleep: Children and adolescents need at least nine hours each night to function properly, while adults need about eight hours.
  • Be physically active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise five or more times a week.
  • Manage stress: Stress and anger can lead to poor overall health. Use stress and anger management techniques to lower your risk. E.ON U.S.'s Family Assistance Program is a valuable resource for maintaining your mental and emotional health.
  • Drink plenty of fluids: Drink fluids, particularly water, to stay hydrated.
  • Eat nutritious food: Aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. More information can be found at the "5 A Day" website.
If you do catch a cold or the flu, stay home from work, school and other social functions, if possible. Not only will your body be able to get the amount of rest it needs, but you also will prevent others from catching your illness.
