More Reasons to Smile
Oral health among seniors in the United States has never been brighter. Today, Americans age 65 and over retain, on average, 18 natural teeth, compared to just seven in 1960. It’s an optimistic trend that’s attributed to better awareness about oral health as well as advances in dental technology. Help seniors have a healthy smile for years to come by following these simple time-tested tips:
- Because dental decay is still common among older adults, it’s especially important to brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, particularly at bedtime.
- Some medications or medical conditions can cause dry mouth, which can be a problem because saliva has anti-bacterial properties that protect against tooth decay. Drinking water with fluoride, chewing sugarless gum and using sugarless candy can help restore moisture and boost your body’s natural defenses against decay.
- The incidence of gum disease is higher among older adults. Symptoms may include bleeding, tender or swollen gums, loose teeth and bad breath. Regular flossing, combined with daily brushing, can help minimize or prevent these symptoms from occurring.
- Receding gums can result in the tooth being exposed and, therefore, more susceptible to decay. Using fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse can help prevent or reduce cavities on root surfaces, making these simple habits even more vital to people with receding gums.
- The use of tobacco and alcohol can cause tooth-related problems and gum inflammation and increase the risk of oral cancer. It’s never too late to kick the habit and reduce these risks.
