June 2006
June is National Safety Month
This year, the National Safety Council celebrates the 10th anniversary of National Safety Month with the theme, "Making our World a Safer Place." Each week, the NSC is providing information about different safety topics related to driving, the workplace, emergency preparedness and the home and community.
Safety is not only a priority in the workplace; it should be considered a top priority at home. Does your home pass the safety test? Check out the following suggestions from the home safety checklist created by the NSC:
- Lock power tools and hazardous substances inside a cabinet and out of children's reach.
- Keep the garage door down and locked, and make sure the automatic reverse mechanism works properly.
- Place a locked barrier around the swimming pool to keep children out.
- Test your smoke alarm regularly.
- Plan a fire escape route for your family.
- Keep household cleaning products and medication out of children's reach.
- Have a carbon monoxide detector and test it regularly.
- Keep the number of your local poison control center posted near every phone.
