Centre College to Receive Green Energy Award Today

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Centre College will be honored today as the first Kentucky college to create a "greener" campus by joining Kentucky Utilities Company's Green Energy Program.

LG&E and KU's Green Energy Program allows the campus to offset the carbon emissions produced by their electricity use through the purchase of "blocks" of green energy. The program provides for the growth and development of renewable energy including that of Mother Ann Lee Hydroelectric Plant on the Kentucky River near Harrodsburg, Ky. The Green Energy program also draws upon other sources for renewable energy such as biomass and landfill energy in Kentucky and surrounding states.

LG&E and KU residential and small business customers can participate for as little as $5 per month. Commercial customers can purchase blocks for as little as $13 per month.

Each $13 block supports 1,000 kWh of area renewable energy. All green energy purchases are voluntary and in addition to the regular bill amount.

Who: Centre College President John A. Roush will receive the Green Energy Award from E.ON U.S. Green Energy Program Manager Ken Slattery as a thank you for Centre's support of the Green Energy Program. The award is a one of a kind piece of recycled glass art made at Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery in Louisville, Ky. Incidentally, the founder of the Flame Run, Brook F. White, Jr., is a Centre College graduate. Centre College students will also speak at the award ceremony on the importance of green efforts in schools.

What: An award ceremony honoring Centre College for their participation in Kentucky Utilities Company's Green Energy program.

Where: The award presentation will be held at 4 p.m. in Centre's Campus Center on the 2nd floor.
