LG&E Offers Incentives to Customers Who Help Utility Reduce Summertime Peak Energy Load

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Gas and Electric Company customers who want to reduce their impact on the environment and receive an incentive in return are encouraged to enroll in the utility's "Demand Conservation" program.

LG&E offers a choice of two incentives to participating customers. When a customer chooses the load control switch option, the program will credit a customer's monthly bill $5 per AC unit, for the months June through September. The switch allows LG&E to curb peak energy demand during the summer months. In addition, there is no need to be home when LG&E installs the switch on the outdoor central air conditioner unit.

The load control switches are equipped with radio-controlled technology that allows LG&E to safely cycle central air conditioner compressors off and on for just a few minutes each hour during peak usage days in the summer. The fan on the air conditioner will continue to run, however. Customers with electric heat pumps, electric water heaters and pool pumps are also eligible for the program. LG&E does not implement the program on weekends or holidays.

The other incentive option available to customers is a top-of-the-line programmable thermostat installed at no charge. These thermostats enable customers to save money and energy all year long when programmed appropriately. The LG&E technician will set up the thermostat as the customer desires and ensure the customer understands how to maximize the benefit of it.

Since the program began in 2001, over 116,000 households have enrolled in the program. Their enrollment allows LG&E to reduce peak demand on the electric system up to 125 megawatts when the switches are activated. One megawatt supplies enough energy to power 720 homes.

"Joining Demand Conservation is one of the most hands-off ways a customer can help the environment and not affect their overall comfort," said John P. Malloy, Vice President of Energy Delivery - Retail Business. "The summer months demand the most from our electric system, so customers who sign up are doing their part to manage our power plants to cut peak load."

Customers can enroll in the program by calling 1-800-356-5467 or by visiting www.eon-us.com/dc.
