LEXINGTON, Ky. — With summertime temperatures in the 90s, Kentucky Utilities knows energy efficiency and conservation are important to customers because greater use of air conditioners and other electrical appliances means energy consumption increases as Kentuckians try to beat the heat.

But by using energy wisely, customers can not only save on their energy bill and reduce energy demand, but also help reduce the production of carbon dioxide, the primary component of greenhouse gases. Here are some simple things you can do to reduce energy bills and demand and help the environment:

Adjust Your Thermostat
By moving your thermostat down two degrees in winter and up two degrees in the summer an average KU residential customer can prevent from 1,130 to 2,750 pounds of carbon dioxide from being produced and save from $45 to $100 per year.

Use Compact Fluorescent Lighting
By replacing five of the highest-use fixtures (or the incandescent light bulbs in them) with high efficiency lighting, an average KU residential customer can prevent approximately 1,100 pounds of carbon dioxide from being produced and save approximately $35 every year in energy costs.

Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
Using less water in the shower means less energy to heat the water. By using a low-flow showerhead, an average KU residential customer can prevent an average of approximately 550 pounds of carbon dioxide from being produced and save an average of approximately $25 a year.

Other easy energy saving steps include:

• Change filters on your HVAC system monthly;
• Close shades and curtains on the sunny side of your house during the summer;
• Run your dishwasher only when its full and use the air drying cycle instead of heated drying;
• Use cold water cycle for washing clothes.
