LG&E, KU Receive Approval of Green Energy Program
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company customers wanting to help preserve the environment, it will get a little easier. The Kentucky Public Service Commission yesterday approved the utilities' proposed Green Energy program.
The Green Energy program provides an option for the utilities' residential, commercial and industrial customers in Kentucky to support the promotion and development of cleaner energy through Green-e Certified® "green tags" or renewable energy certificates.
"It's important for us to provide our customers with tools to help them do their part to preserve the environment," said Vic Staffieri, Chairman, CEO and President, E.ON U.S. "Green Tags are making a difference in the effort to replace carbon with renewable energy and they are just one of the many ways we can all work together to help improve the environment for the future."
The voluntary program allows customers to add green energy to their bill — in as many $5 increments that they choose — and LG&E and KU will purchase the corresponding green tags from renewable energy sources in Kentucky and surrounding states. Green tags represent the environmental benefits associated with energy being created from renewable sources such as landfill, biomass, hydro, wind, solar or other renewable sources.
The program also allows the company the opportunity to develop additional renewable energy from green energy contributions as it becomes economically feasible.
An average LG&E or KU household in Kentucky consumes approximately 900 kilowatt hours of electricity each month. With each $5 block sold, KU and LG&E will purchase 300 kilowatt hours of green energy. Therefore, if customers wanted to "match" average monthly household electricity usage, they would want to commit to having LG&E and KU purchase three blocks of green energy for a total contribution of $15 per month.
