State Senate, House Resolution to Honor E.ON U.S.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — E.ON U.S., parent of Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company, will be commended for its commitment and contribution to the FutureGen Alliance and for the responsible use of Kentucky Coal, in a resolution to be passed today by the State House and Senate.
The measure is sponsored by Representative Ron Weston (D-37th District-Louisville) and Senator Denise Harper-Angel (D-35th District-Louisville). E.ON U.S. Chairman, CEO, and President, Vic Staffieri, will be acknowledged to accept the resolution.
"Clean coal technology produces responsible energy. I'm very pleased E.ON U.S. is committed to a better world powered by responsible energy," said Senator Denise Harper Angel, D-Louisville. Representative Ron Weston, D-Louisville, added "E.ON U.S.'s FutureGen research commitment will help keep coal in the mix as a low cost, environmentally responsible fuel. This is important to all Kentuckians."
E.ON U.S. in October announced a $25 million commitment to join the FutureGen Alliance, the non-profit consortium of global electric utilities and coal companies working with the U.S. Department of Energy to site and develop FutureGen, the world's first coal-fired, near "zero emissions" power plant.
The FutureGen announcement followed another significant environmental investment made by the company. Last April, the University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Energy Research received a three-year, $1.5 million commitment from E.ON U.S. to study technology to reduce greenhouse gases.
"During 2006, E.ON U.S. took an important first step towards addressing global climate change through the funding of research and development that will be critical to finding the necessary solutions to this challenge," said Staffieri. "We're honored to be recognized for being environmentally-conscious, while continuing to utilize coal, a vital resource to Kentucky's economy."
E.ON U.S., headquartered in Louisville, Ky., is a subsidiary of E.ON A.G., the world's largest investor-owned energy services provider. E.ON U.S. is a diversified energy services company that owns and operates Louisville Gas and Electric Company, a regulated utility that serves 321,000 natural gas and 394,000 electric customers in Louisville and 16 surrounding counties, and Kentucky Utilities Company, a regulated electric utility in Lexington, Ky., that serves 525,000 customers in 77 Kentucky counties and five counties in Virginia.
