KU Celebrates Earth Day with Tree Seedling Giveaway in Six Counties
(LEXINGTON, Ky.) – Kentucky Utilities Company (KU) will join other local Earth Day activities around the state by giving away about 20,000 Redbud tree seedlings on April 20th, in Lexington and its surrounding counties.
The counties where the seedlings will be offered are Fayette, Woodford, Scott, Bourbon, Scott and Madison. The giveaway locations will be the KU offices in Versailles, Georgetown, Paris, Winchester, and Richmond. They will also be offered at City Hall in Midway.
Customers may pick up seedlings, free of charge, beginning at 8 a.m., as long as supplies last. The giveaway program supports KU's advice on planting trees: Be Tree Smart...From the Start.
Planting the right tree in the right place is important because the right location will help keep limbs away from electric lines as the tree matures, and will reduce the possibility of outages.
Falling tree limbs on lines is one of the major causes of power outages. Planting the seedlings in the proper location also can provide shade for houses which, over the long term, will help reduce energy costs.
KU has offered free tree seedlings to customers in the spring of most years since 1991, and has given away more than a half-million seedlings during that time.
