Edison Electric Institute Names LG&E Energy Top Safety Performer
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - July 26, 2004) LG&E Energy is one of the top safety performers in utilities of similar size, according to recently released data from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).
EEI's 2003 Safety Survey ranked LG&E Energy's safety performance third out of 14 comparable utilities. LG&E Energy began formally benchmarking safety performance data in 1998, and this marks the first time the Company has placed in the top quartile of performers. Over that six-year period, LG&E Energy has experienced a 43 percent reduction in OSHA Recordable Injuries/Illnesses, and a 73 percent reduction in Lost-Time Injuries.
"This is a significant milestone for the Company, and testimony to the hard work and commitment of each employee to make this the safest workplace possible," said Vic Staffieri, LG&E Energy's Chairman, CEO and President. "Employees and their families can feel confident that employee safety is of absolute importance in the way we do business at LG&E Energy."
The EEI ranking is the latest in LG&E Energy's long history of safety performance recognition. The Company has received numerous safety awards from the Kentucky Gas Association, American Gas Association, Kentucky and North Carolina Departments of Labor, Carolina Star Program, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
The EEI Safety Survey is produced annually to assist members' safety programs through cross-company comparison of safety data. The survey includes not only EEI member companies but also allows energy service organizations outside EEI membership to participate. The 2003 survey represented 65 utilities.
