LG&E Energy, Metro Louisville Police Unveil Kids' ID Program
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Dec. 22, 2003) Make a little more room in your wallets mom and dad. The Metro Louisville Police Department and LG&E Energy are launching a program to provide your kids with IDs, too.
Called KidPrint ID, the voluntary program will be offered at schools and special events throughout Jefferson County. Children who participate will be provided with a free durable, plastic identification card featuring their photograph and thumbprint, as well as key information including their height, weight, etc.
The program will be administered by LMPD officers. LG&E Energy purchased the necessary equipment.
If parents choose to do so, the Louisville Metro Police Department can store the ID in a database where it can be accessed if a child is lost or taken. This information is critical in case of an emergency and can be quickly shared with other law enforcement agencies and even the Amber Alert system.
The LMPD and LG&E Energy hope to produce up to 15,000 KidPrint IDs in the first year of the program alone.
"No one wants to think their child can be taken and we live in a safe community," said Sgt. David Blake, a member of the community relations division that runs the program. "Nevertheless, this is another level of protection — even if it's just a tool to help find a child who has wandered away in a department store. Kids love it and it has a ton of applications. For example, it can really come in handy at airports when you're traveling with your kids."
The back of the ID cards feature tips from LG&E Energy for dealing with electrical or gas emergencies.
"The Metro Louisville Police have a fantastic community relations program and we have been happy to work with them on not only this project, but a number of others as well," said Chip Keeling, LG&E Energy's vice president of Communications. "We share their vision for a safe community."
