LG&E Energy Foundation Renews Sponsorship of Cabbage Patch's Streetball Showdown
(Louisville, Ky. - May 7, 2003) The Cabbage Patch Settlement House is pleased to announce the renewal of LG&E Energy Foundation's title sponsorship of the organization's annual 3-on-3 Streetball Showdown basketball tournament.
This marks the third consecutive year the LG&E Energy Foundation has sponsored the event, which draws nearly 1,000 teams from all across Kentucky and southern Indiana. This year's event is scheduled for June 28 and 29 at Witherspoon and Preston streets near Waterfront Park. Streetball Showdown has grown into the area's largest, outdoor amateur basketball event, featuring 3,500 players of all ages and more than 70,000 spectators.
In its 16th year, Streetball Showdown is the major fund-raiser for The Cabbage Patch — a 93-year-old non-profit organization that empowers families and children to be self-sufficient by helping them maximize their spiritual, social, emotional, physical, moral, economic and educational potential. The Cabbage Patch programs include safe after-school activities, tutoring and counseling services, parenting classes and other enrichment opportunities. Annually, The Cabbage Patch serves thousands of children and families through these activities.
"We depend on this event to provide about 10 percent of our budget each year and we simply could not do it without sponsors like the LG&E Energy Foundation and other faithful supporters," said Tracy Holladay, executive director of The Cabbage Patch.
"We are pleased to sponsor one of the nation's premiere 3-on-3 basketball competitions," said Vic Staffieri, LG&E Energy's CEO. "But more importantly, we're proud to support the great work of The Cabbage Patch."
The tournament has divisions for youth, men, women, co-eds, companies and wheelchair athletes. Teams are placed in divisions based on age, height and skill level. Registration requires four members per team, three players plus an alternate.
Teams can register on-line at www.streetballshowdown.com. Registration forms are also available at area Meijer stores and McDonald's restaurants beginning May 19. The registration deadline is June 13. For more information, visit the website at www.streetballshowdown.com or call the LG&E Energy Foundation Streetball Office at 502.636.1888 or 800.445.0256.
