LG&E to Host Women in Science and Engineering Expo
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (March 27, 2003) Reinforcing positive image and promoting acceptance of women in science will be the focus of the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) expo, to be held this Friday, March 28, at the LG&E Building downtown.
Formed last year at duPont Manual High School, WiSE encourages female involvement in math and science classes, starting at an early age. LG&E will host the WiSE expo, where the focus will be to encourage young girls to proactively pursue science and math careers. By setting up the expo as a field trip for fifth-grade students, WiSE hopes to encourage female participation as well as male acceptance of women in math and science classes and fields.
"Maintaining a diverse workforce in traditionally male-dominated fields, such as engineering, is a steadfast objective at LG&E," said Paula Pottinger, LG&E Energy's Vice President of Human Resources. "Hosting the WiSE Expo is another way for LG&E to demonstrate to young people the importance of diversity in education as well as in the workforce."
The day-long expo will also focus on female self-esteem, through a video criticizing the portrayal of women in advertising as model-perfect or unintelligent.
LG&E is a wholly-owned subsidiary of LG&E Energy Corp. that serves customers in Louisville, Ky., and 16 surrounding counties.
